Paws and Paths: Our Favourite Dog-Friendly Walks in East Devon
One of the greatest joys of living and working in East Devon is the sheer variety of landscapes right on our doorstep. From the salty air of the Jurassic Coast to the dappled sunlight of our ancient woodlands, we truly are spoiled for choice.

At Waggy Tails, we know that a happy dog is one that has had a good run, a deep sniff, and a bit of an adventure. After a relaxing grooming session, there’s nothing quite like heading out to explore.
Here are three of our absolute favorite local spots for a post-spa stroll.
1. The Coastal Calm: Budleigh Salterton to Otterton
For those who love the sound of the waves, the path along the River Otter is hard to beat.
The Route: Start at the Lime Kiln car park in Budleigh and follow the river inland towards Otterton.
Why we love it: It’s a flat, gentle walk that offers plenty of safe spots for a dip in the river (ideal for those water-loving Labradors!).
The "Premium" Stop: Once you reach Otterton Mill, you can grab a coffee and a treat while your dog rests in the shade of their beautiful courtyard.
2. The Woodland Wander: Fire Beacon Woods
If your dog prefers the rustle of leaves and the thrill of a forest trail, Fire Beacon Hill near Sidmouth is a hidden gem.
The Route: Follow the circular paths through the heathland and wooded areas.
Why we love it: The views across the Sid Valley are breathtaking on a clear day. The ground here is often a little firmer, which is a blessing if you’re trying to keep that fresh "just-groomed" tummy clean for at least a few hours!
3. The Hidden Valley: The Byes, Sidmouth
A local favorite for a reason, The Byes offers a tranquil escape from the bustling town center.
The Route: A riverside walk that connects Sidford to Sidmouth.
Why we love it: It is beautifully maintained and feels like a lush, green sanctuary. There are wide open meadows perfect for a bit of "zoomie" energy, yet it remains peaceful enough for senior dogs who prefer a slow, sensory wander.
A Tip from the Styling Table
While we love a Devon adventure, we know that adventures often lead to mud, burrs, and sticky buds!
The Post-Walk Ritual: After a walk in these beautiful spots, we recommend a quick check of your dog's paws and ears for any "hitchhikers" (like grass seeds or brambles). A quick brush-through once they are dry will help prevent those adventurous tangles from turning into mats.
Where is your favorite spot?
We’re always looking for new paths to recommend to our clients. Next time you’re in the spa, let us know where you and your best friend have been exploring lately!
With love and wagging tails,
Sandra
